Floating Pond Fountains: How They Work and How to Choose

A floating pond fountain rides on a float with the motor suspended beneath it, held in place by two or three mooring lines. Because the unit floats, it self-adjusts to water level changes, installs without any structure, and can be repositioned in minutes. All it asks for is about 18 to 24 inches of depth so the intake stays clear of the bottom.

Choosing a Floating Fountain

  • Water size: one half HP to a half acre, three quarter to one HP up to an acre, two HP and beyond for larger water. Keep display height at or below half the pond width.
  • Job to do: aerating models move the most water for fish health; decorative models put the energy into pattern and height.
  • Mooring: shore-tied lines suit most ponds; anchor kits handle large or public water where shore access is limited.
  • Winter: in hard-freeze climates, pull the unit before ice-over; the float and nozzle are the vulnerable parts.
