Pond Filter Systems

A good pond filter is the backbone of clean, healthy water. Whether you're running a small backyard water garden or a large koi pond, the right filtration system removes debris, breaks down fish waste, and keeps your water clear without constant manual cleaning.

How Pond Filtration Works

Most pond filter systems use two stages of filtration working together:

Mechanical filtration physically traps solid debris — leaves, fish waste, uneaten food, and sediment — before it has a chance to decompose and cloud your water. Filter pads and screens handle this first line of defense.

Biological filtration is where the real water quality magic happens. Beneficial bacteria colonize specialized filter media inside your filter, converting toxic ammonia and nitrites from fish waste into harmless nitrates. The more surface area your filter media provides, the more bacteria it can support — and the cleaner your water stays.

Many pond owners also add UV clarification, which uses ultraviolet light to eliminate single-cell algae that cause green water. Several of our pressurized filters include built-in UV options, giving you mechanical, biological, and UV filtration in a single unit.

Choosing the Right Pond Filter System

The size of your pond, the number of fish, and how much sunlight your pond receives all factor into which filter system will work best. Here are a few guidelines:

  • Small ponds and water gardens (under 1,000 gallons): A compact pressurized filter is usually all you need. These are easy to install, can be partially buried for concealment, and require minimal maintenance.
  • Medium to large koi ponds (1,000–5,000+ gallons): Look for a pressurized bead filter or bio-tube filter with higher flow capacity. Koi produce significantly more waste than goldfish, so you need a filter with robust biological capacity.
  • Pond filter and pump combos: Pairing your filter with the right pond pump is critical. The pump needs to turn over your pond's volume at least once every two hours. If you need help matching a pump to your filter, give us a call — we're happy to help you size it correctly.

Why Pressurized Filters?

All of the pond filters we carry are pressurized systems, which means they can be installed at or below water level — even buried up to the control head for a cleaner look around your pond. Unlike gravity-fed filters, pressurized filters don't need to sit above the waterline, giving you much more flexibility in placement.

Backflushing is simple on all of our models. When the cleaning indicator tells you it's time, you rotate the control valve and flush — no disassembly, no getting your hands dirty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to clean my pond filter?

Most pond filters only need to be cleaned when the built-in cleaning indicator shows increased back pressure — typically every few weeks during peak season. Backflushing takes just a few minutes.

Can I bury my pond filter?

Yes. All of the pressurized filters we carry can be buried up to the control head or cleaning ring, making them easy to conceal in your landscaping.

Do I need a UV clarifier with my pond filter?

If green water from algae is a concern, yes — UV clarification is very effective at eliminating the single-cell algae that mechanical and biological filtration alone can't catch. Several of our filters offer built-in UV as an option.

What size pond filter do I need?

As a general rule, match the filter's rated capacity to your pond size and fish load. For koi ponds, size up — koi produce more waste than the average pond fish. If you're unsure, call us and we'll help you pick the right system.

Do I need a separate pump for my pond filter?

Yes — pond filters require a separate pond pump to push water through the system. The pump should be able to circulate your full pond volume at least once every two hours. We can help you match the right pump to your filter.
