Nothing adds to the look and feel of a pond than a waterfall. The sound of falling water is calm and soothing and is one of the principles of Feng Shui. You might think that adding such a feature to your pond would be a big undertaking, but it is actually quite easy to include a waterfall that looks as it if a natural part of the setting. The first and most important part of this project, though, is to make a plan before you start any work.
How to plan for and design a waterfall
- You must choose the right location for the waterfall so that it can be seen from the area where you spend most of your time, such as gazebo or a patio.
- You have to make sure that you have enough space for the size of waterfall you want to build.
- It has to be within close proximity to the electrical supply.
The next step is to choose the type of waterfall you want to build. There are basically two types of natural looking designs – one that cascades in a sheet of water or one that falls over a series of layers of rock. Even though the single sheet designs seem to be easier to build and emulate the waterfalls built by Mother Nature, they do require more engineering and design. The multi-level waterfall designs are the ones that are easier to build and look the most complicated.
Sketching the waterfall design
You don’t have to be an architect to sketch a rough draft of what you want the finished waterfall to look like. The main point to keep in mind is that the waterfall should narrow with the height. In your sketch you should include the placement of rocks and plants that will really enhance the design.
Different heights for a waterfall produce different sounds of falling water. You will need to experiment to find the right sound for you because you don’t want it to drown out the sounds of conversation or the sounds of birds in the pond area. There is a simple way in which you can find out how high you want to build the waterfall. Fill a bucket with water and then using a garden hose at different heights let more water flow into the bucket. When you achieve just the right pitch, take the measurement from where you are standing and the bucket. This will be the desired height for your waterfall.
Materials you need for your waterfall
There is a wide variety of materials needed for waterfall construction. One of the most important is rocks. When possible choose rocks from your area because this will give the result a more natural appearance. You will also have to use board to construct the base of the waterfall and install pumps and LED Underwater Lighting needed for the best effect. It doesn’t take long to get the project completed and you can make it a weekend project for your family or a group of friends.
